Romance of French lace
French lace has long been synonymous with luxury lingerie. Known for its delicate floral patterns and intricate designs, French lace has roots that go back many centuries, where it was cherished as a symbol of romance and meticulous artistry. For Angela Friedman, crafting fine lace lingerie isn’t just a style choice—it’s an homage to the lace-makers who pioneered these exquisite patterns in years past, creating a material that’s both tactile and visually appealing.
Many Angela Friedman designs rely heavily on fine imported French lace
We use French lace as an embellishment, but its softness and durability are even more important. French lace has long been regarded as the finest in the world for its combination of intricacy and ethereal quality, something that other types of lace have never been able to replicate. Especially for lingerie, the softness against the skin is key: At Angela Friedman, we simply could never commit to utilizing a textile that didn’t feel as nice as it looked! But with French lace, the designs are just as comfortable to wear as they are breathtaking to behold.
By incorporating this classic fabric, our lace lingerie designs create a visual and sensory connection to this long-standing tradition of femininity and allure, bridging the gap between old-world elegance and modern-day confidence.

English influence: Victorian Era elegance
While French lace speaks to romance, Angela Friedman’s designs also embody a distinctly English sense of structure and sophistication. English fashion, particularly during the Victorian era and the Arts and Crafts movement, was known for streamlined and understated elegance. Our Nouvelle Collection particularly hinted toward a William Morris influence. From that collection’s geometric patterned corsets to gentle ruffles and sleek silhouettes, the Victorian influence of restrained refinement really shone through:

Angela Friedman’s designs continue to take inspiration from this classic aesthetic, incorporating high-waisted cuts, flowing robes in sleek silk satin, and both floral and geometric patterns. With more recent collections featuring botanicals and floral designs found in an English Garden and designs inspired by local wildflowers, we continue to nod to English heritage. It’s that lovely balance between nostalgia and modernity that really makes Angela Friedman stand apart.

From the ballet stage to the lingerie studio
Before establishing her own brand, Angela worked in the theatrical costume industry, bringing to life intricate, breathtaking designs for theater, opera, and ballet. She worked as the Head of the Ladies’ Department of the New York City Ballet Costume Shop, where she learned the key skills necessary to combine visual elegance with durability—qualities essential for costumes that would endure the spotlight’s scrutiny and dancers’ movement for 8 shows a week! Aside from the sturdy construction techniques learned, this experience also left an indelible mark on her approach to lingerie design. Her work with dancers gave Angela a deep appreciation for how fabric moves and interacts with the body, as well as experience working with the delicate textures of silk chiffon, whisper thin mesh, and sheer panels to show off the body.

Angela Friedman’s Firebird Collection especially embodied this interaction of worlds, featuring ballet-inspired designs like corsets and sheer tulle robes and dressing gowns. The campaign photoshoot was even brought to life with a professional ballerina, performing on stage. But you’ll see hints of this kind of stage drama in all of her collections: flowing dramatic fabrics; delicate trims that you might only notice up close; and opulent details like gold hardware, layered lace trims, and 100% pure silk textiles. Angela Friedman’s lingerie isn’t just meant to be worn—it’s meant to be experienced, transforming everyday routines into something magical and memorable.

This theatrical influence also brings a storytelling element to each piece. There’s a sense that each garment could belong to a different character, allowing wearers to step into a new persona each time they wear it. Whether it’s a feminine lace bralette or a bold silk robe that drapes elegantly to the floor, each piece embodies a blend of function and artistry.

Drawing from the romanticism of French lace, sleek English tailoring, and the theatrical essence of her work in ballet, her designs offer a unique experience—elevating lingerie from a simple garment to a form of self-expression.
