The Minimalist Suitcase: How to pack silk lingerie for travel
Packing everything you need into a single carry-on is incredibly freeing! It simplifies your choices and lets you move through your trip with much more ease and speed. But it’s easy to assume that travelling light means leaving behind anything delicate or luxurious, especially silk lingerie and loungewear... But in reality, the opposite is true.
At Angela Friedman, we’ve spent over 14 years working with silk and designing pieces that are lightweight, breathable, and made to be worn in different ways. With roots in New York and a studio now based in London, travel has always shaped how we think about clothing. One thing we’ve learned over the years is that a well-packed suitcase doesn’t begin with complex outfits. It begins with what you wear underneath them.
Choose those pieces well, and everything else falls into place!

Why silk lingerie is the foundation of a travel wardrobe
When packing for a trip, it's tempting to treat lingerie as an afterthought, but when space is limited, it's the smartest place to start:
The right foundations make the rest of your wardrobe work harder. A silk camisole and tap pants set can double as sleepwear and a base layer under daywear, while a bias-cut silk slip helps dresses avoid clinging and stay fresh for multiple wearings. Even a lightweight robe can transition between slow mornings and evenings out, adding comfort without taking up too much space.
When each piece has more than one purpose, you don’t need as much overall. Instead of packing for every possible scenario, you can rely on a smaller group of items that work together, which is what makes a minimalist suitcase actually function.
Material plays a big role here, too. Not every fabric holds up to this kind of repeated wear, which is exactly why silk stands out!

The advantage of real silk
When space is limited, fabric choice matters more than you might think, and this is where silk really shines.
Real silk (not polyester satin!) has so many hidden benefits: It's incredibly lightweight and folds down to almost nothing, which already makes it ideal for travel. But the real impact shows up once you wear it. Silk is breathable and anti-microbial, and it naturally helps regulate body temperature, so it feels comfortable whether you’re stepping off a long-haul flight or heading out for a sunny brunch. It layers easily as well, without the cling or clamminess you often get with synthetic fabrics.
One of the most useful, and often surprising, qualities of silk is how well it handles repeat wear. It doesn’t hold onto odors in the same way synthetics do, so even after a particularly warm day, a silk garment can be aired out overnight and feel (and smell!) fresh again by morning. When you’re packing light, that kind of reliability makes all the difference.
Of course, not all silk is created equal. How a piece is cut and constructed has a huge impact on how it performs over time. Angela's background in theatrical and dance costume design plays an important role here: Costumes are made to withstand constant movement and repeated wear, for up to 8 shows per week! That same thoughtful design carries through into our lingerie and loungewear. The result is silk that not only looks beautiful, but holds its shape, layers smoothly, and keeps up with you throughout your vacation.
That's what makes silk such a strong foundation for a travel wardrobe. You’re not just choosing something luxurious, you're choosing something that works harder than it looks.

The silk pieces that do the most work
When you're packing light, a few well-chosen pieces can carry more weight than a suitcase full of careless options. The goal isn't to have more. It's to have pieces that do more.
A 100% silk slip is the perfect starting point. During the day, it works quietly underneath dresses, helping them sit better and preventing any unwanted show-through in bright light and keeps your outer layers fresher for a second wearing. In the evening, that same slip can double as sleepwear or a relaxed loungewear look after a long day.
Silk separates like a camisole and tap pants set offers even more flexibility. Worn together, they're an elegant option for sleeping or unwinding in your hotel room. Separately, the camisole can move effortlessly into your daytime wardrobe, tucking neatly into trousers or skirts and layering under a camisole for a subtle innerwear-as-outerwear look.
Then there's the robe, which might seem like an indulgence at first, but is truly one of the most practical items you can bring. A lightweight silk robe takes up very little space but adds an immediate sense of comfort, whether you're getting ready in the morning or winding down at night. It also works beautifully as an extra layer over fitted trousers for a casual dinner or quiet evening walk.
Each of these pieces earns its place by doing more than one job. Together, they create a small, adaptable system that supports everything else you've packed, without adding bulk or complexity.

Small silk accessories that make a big difference
When you're working with limited space, accessories need to be carefully thought-out as well: The best ones are small, adaptable, and genuinely useful.
A silk sleep mask is an easy win. It takes up almost no space, but makes a noticeable difference on long flights or in hotel rooms that lack blackout curtains. Silk is especially well suited here, as it's breathable and gentle on the delicate skin around your eyes.
A large silk scarf is just as versatile, adding interest to a simple outfit, acting as an extra layer when the temperature drops, or doubling as a practical cover for sun shade. It's the kind of piece you might not have thought to pack, but once you have one with you, you’ll find yourself reaching for it again and again!

The minimalist packing list
A small silk edit like this is all you need:
- A silk slip: Your foundation for layering, sleeping, and everything in between.
- A camisole and tap pants set: Wear it for sleep, lounging, or separate the pieces into daytime looks.
- A lightweight silk robe: For slow mornings, easy layering, and a touch of luxury wherever you are.
- A silk sleep mask: Small, simple, and surprisingly essential!
- A large silk scarf: For warmth, coverage, and effortless styling.
Each piece works on its own, but the real value comes from how they work together with your outerwear looks, allowing you to pack less without feeling limited.

Traveling with intention
Minimalist travel isn't about limiting your favorite looks or preventing yourself from bringing anything luxurious at all! It’s about removing the friction that comes with too many choices that you never needed in the first place.
When every piece in your suitcase is something you genuinely enjoy wearing, getting dressed becomes the easiest part of your day. Instead of second-guessing your options and wondering why you brought that extra-large suitcase, you'll simply reach for what works and move ahead with your plans for the day.
Packing light doesn't mean leaving luxury behind. In many ways, it’s the opposite: Choose pieces that feel good, perform well, and adapt to whatever the day brings, and you'll be able to focus on where you are, not what you're wearing!
